England Advance to UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 Semi-Finals After Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory Over Sweden

England are through to the semi-finals of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 after a dramatic 2–2 draw with Sweden that ended in a tense penalty shootout, where the Lionesses emerged victorious despite being two goals down at halftime.

Trailing 2–0 after a dominant first-half performance by Sweden who struck through Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius England appeared all but eliminated. However, a stunning comeback led by veteran Lucy Bronze and 19-year-old rising star Michelle Agyemang turned the match on its head.

Bronze sparked the turnaround in the 79th minute with a powerful header from a Chloe Kelly cross, before Agyemang, making only her second international appearance, equalised just 103 seconds later with a composed finish to send the match into extra time.

Captain Leah Williamson was forced off with an injury during the additional 30 minutes, adding to the physical and emotional toll on the squad. But England held on to take the match to penalties where chaos unfolded.

Alessia Russo converted the opening spot kick and goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made an early save. However, misses from Lauren James and Beth Mead nearly ended England’s hopes. Hampton responded with another save to keep the Lionesses alive. Alex Greenwood’s miss handed Sweden a potential match-winner, but Jennifer Falk blasted her attempt over the bar.

Grace Clinton missed England’s next effort, but Hampton again denied Sweden. Bronze converted under pressure, and when Smilla Holmberg skied Sweden’s final penalty, England secured their place in the semi-finals.

The comeback showcased the squad’s resilience and character. Kelly, who was pivotal in England’s Euro 2022 triumph, played a key role once again delivering the cross for Bronze’s goal and rallying the team.

Agyemang, dubbed a “wildcard” pick before the tournament, justified her inclusion with another standout moment. After scoring a stunning volley on her debut earlier in the group stage, her equaliser against Sweden confirmed her arrival on the biggest stage.

England now await the winner of France vs. Norway in the semi-finals, as they look to defend their continental crown and reach a second consecutive Women’s Euro final.
