Benfica prepares proposal to buy Paulo Dybala from Roma; Argentine faces €12 million fine

Portuguese giants eye experienced Argentine as potential Di María replacement

Benfica are reportedly preparing a formal proposal to sign Paulo Dybala from AS Roma, with the Argentine forward potentially available for €12 million, the value of his release clause. The 31-year-old remains a standout performer in Serie A and has emerged as a target for the Portuguese club as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The news, first reported by Tuttomercato, suggests that Benfica see Dybala as a marquee signing—especially after a below-par campaign and the departure of fellow Argentine Ángel Di María, who returned to Rosario Central following the Club World Cup.

Dybala’s Future in Doubt

Dybala is under contract with Roma until June 2026, but the relatively modest termination fee makes him an attainable target for several European clubs. After scoring 12 goals in 36 appearances last season, the former Juventus star remains a crucial player for the Giallorossi but could be tempted by a new challenge as he eyes a spot in Argentina’s 2026 World Cup squad.

While the forward is settled in Italy and views Serie A as more competitive than Portugal’s Primeira Liga, Benfica believe they can make a compelling case. The club’s consistent presence in European competitions and their status as a domestic powerhouse may play a key role in swaying the player.

Benfica to Submit Offer Soon

Sources close to the negotiations expect Benfica to approach Dybala’s representatives in the coming days. The Lisbon club is confident they can present an attractive sporting and financial package that may convince the Argentine to move.

Despite Roma’s desire to retain Dybala, the existence of a fixed €12 million clause leaves the Italian side with limited negotiating power if the player chooses to leave.

Benfica are aiming to reinforce key areas of their squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, and landing a player of Dybala’s experience and technical ability would mark a significant statement of intent.
