Fenerbahçe coach Mourinho talks about a possible return to Portugal

Fenerbahçe manager rules out retirement, expresses desire to coach in Portugal at his peak.

José Mourinho has fueled speculation about a future return to Portuguese football after making a bold statement following Fenerbahçe’s 2–1 friendly win over Portimonense in Albufeira, Portugal. Speaking to local broadcaster SporTV, the 61-year-old coach said he is determined to return to his homeland not for a late-career farewell, but to take on a new challenge at full strength.

“I’ll definitely come to Portugal. It hasn’t happened yet, but it will,” Mourinho said. “Not because I feel close to retirement I’m far from that. But I don’t want to come back for a golden retirement or the final years of my career. I want to come back at a high point, healthy, physically strong, and mentally sharp. Club or national team? Anything.”

Mourinho’s Contract with Fenerbahçe Runs Until 2026

Mourinho joined Turkish giants Fenerbahçe in mid-2024 on a two-year deal valid until June 2026. He was unveiled in front of thousands of fans at Ülker Stadium in Istanbul, taking charge of a club eager to reclaim domestic and European glory.

So far, Mourinho has overseen the club in multiple competitions:

  • Europa League: Eliminated in the Round of 16
  • Champions League Qualifying: Exited in the 3rd qualifying round
  • Turkish Super Lig: Finished in 2nd place
  • Turkish Cup: Knocked out in the quarterfinals

Despite the lack of silverware in his debut season, Mourinho remains a central figure in Fenerbahçe’s project.

A Storied Career Across Europe’s Elite

Mourinho last coached in Portugal during his historic run with FC Porto, where he won the Champions League in 2004. Since then, he has led clubs in England (Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham), Italy (Inter Milan, AS Roma), and Spain (Real Madrid), earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most decorated managers.

His remarks come at a time when the Portuguese national team and several Primeira Liga clubs are preparing for transitions, possibly opening doors for the “Special One” in the near future.
