Getafe gives Botafogo the slip and signs Real Madrid’s Mario Martin on loan

In a move that caught many by surprise, Getafe CF has secured the loan signing of Mario Martín from Real Madrid, edging out a last-minute approach from Brazilian side Botafogo, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
The 21-year-old midfielder, no longer in Real Madrid’s plans for the 2024/25 season, was given clearance to leave by manager Xabi Alonso, who continues reshaping the squad ahead of the La Liga campaign.
Botafogo Misses Out Despite Ancelotti Request
Brazilian club Botafogo had made a formal offer for Martín, reportedly at the request of assistant coach Davide Ancelotti, son of Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti. However, the young midfielder declined the move, expressing his preference to remain in Spain and compete in La Liga.
Getafe Strikes Loan Deal With Option to Buy
Getafe quickly stepped in, agreeing to a loan deal with an option to buy. The agreement ensures Martín stays in top-flight Spanish football, with the opportunity to earn regular minutes and potentially secure a permanent move next summer.
The deal is seen as a win for Getafe, who continues to strengthen their squad with domestic talents ahead of a challenging season.
Real Madrid Continues Squad Overhaul Under Xabi Alonso
As part of a broader shakeup, Real Madrid is actively offloading players who won’t feature prominently this season. In addition to Martín, decisions are being made regarding surplus players, including left-backs Fran García and Ferland Mendy, both of whom could be sold following the arrival of Álvaro Carreras.
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to key young talents like Arda Güler and new signings Endrick and Claudio Echeverri, who are being integrated into Alonso’s long-term vision.
The most high-profile internal change remains Kylian Mbappé’s assumption of the iconic number 10 shirt, formerly worn by Luka Modrić, symbolizing a new era at the Santiago Bernabéu.
