Xabi Alonso Yet to Define Eduardo Camavinga’s Role at Real Madrid

Eduardo Camavinga’s future at Real Madrid remains unclear, with head coach Xabi Alonso still undecided on how to deploy the French midfielder in the upcoming season. The 21-year-old has yet to make his debut under the new regime after suffering a serious injury that cut his previous campaign short.
The uncertainty stems not only from Camavinga’s recent injury woes but also from a rapidly evolving midfield dynamic following the departures of club legends Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos.
Tactical Shifts Under Alonso Leave Camavinga in Limbo
During the Club World Cup in the United States, Xabi Alonso began experimenting with his midfield structure. Jude Bellingham was pushed into a more attacking role, while Arda Güler was tested in deeper positions. Federico Valverde showed his versatility by operating in several areas, and Aurélien Tchouaméni impressed with his ability to alternate between defensive midfield and centre-back.
This tactical flexibility leaves Camavinga, a traditional holding midfielder, in a challenging position. Tchouaméni appears to have locked down the defensive midfield role, reducing Camavinga’s chances of reclaiming it.
Injury-Plagued Season Hinders Camavinga’s Momentum
Camavinga’s form has been hampered by repeated injuries. He began last season on the sidelines and suffered three additional muscle setbacks throughout the campaign. His season officially ended in April after a complete rupture of his left adductor tendon.
These ongoing fitness issues have disrupted his progress at Real Madrid, where he has struggled to cement a regular starting role since joining from Rennes in 2021.
Competition Fierce Despite Midfield Vacancies
Although Modrić’s departure creates potential space in midfield, Camavinga faces stiff competition from emerging and established names. Xabi Alonso is reportedly evaluating whether Camavinga can adapt to a more advanced midfield position or if a rotational role is more realistic.
A return to left-back a position Camavinga has filled in the past seems unlikely due to strong depth in that area, including Fran García, Ferland Mendy, and new signing Marc Carreras.
Decision Expected in Coming Weeks
As Camavinga nears full recovery, Real Madrid fans await Alonso’s verdict on the French international’s future at the Bernabéu. Whether he becomes a key figure or remains a squad option will likely depend on his ability to stay fit and adapt to a more fluid tactical framework.
