Real Madrid eliminated by PSG in 4-0 loss at MetLife Stadium

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso experienced his first defeat at the helm of the Spanish giants on Wednesday, as his side was soundly beaten 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup semifinals.

Held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the match saw PSG dominate from start to finish, leaving Alonso and his squad without answers in their bid for a place in the final.

A Promising Start Cut Short

Xabi Alonso took charge of Real Madrid in late May, following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, who left to coach the Brazil national team. Alonso’s managerial debut for the club came in the group stage of the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal, where Madrid could only manage a 1-1 draw.

However, the team responded well in the following matches, defeating Pachuca 3-1 despite playing a man down after Asencio’s red card, and then recording wins over RB Salzburg, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund to reach the semi-finals.

Despite the recent momentum, the Madrid side was overwhelmed by a clinical PSG performance. The French champions scored twice in each half, with Fabián Ruiz bagging a brace and earning Player of the Match honors.

Disappointing End to First Tournament

The heavy defeat marks the end of Alonso’s first international tournament in charge of Real Madrid. His record from the competition closes with four wins, one draw, and one loss.

Real Madrid will now shift focus to the upcoming La Liga season, where Xabi Alonso will have the chance to regroup and solidify his long-term vision for the club.
