Italian giants prepare bid for Uruguayan left-back as Palmeiras fights to keep its defensive leader

After being knocked out of the Club World Cup by Real Madrid, Juventus is already moving in the transfer market and their top priority is Joaquín Piquerez, Palmeiras’ Uruguayan left-back.

According to journalist Jorge Nicola, the Serie A club is preparing a formal July bid for the 26-year-old, who has quietly become one of the most consistent defenders in South America.

Juventus Makes First Move — But Palmeiras Isn’t Letting Go Easily

Coach Igor Tudor sees Piquerez as the ideal reinforcement for Juve’s left side, following heavy losses to Manchester City and Real Madrid. However, Palmeiras is reluctant to sell, with the board reportedly working behind the scenes on a contract renewal to block European interest

According to Nosso Palestra, Verdão wants to avoid dipping into the market and is doing everything possible to convince the defender to stay including a salary bump and extended terms.

Piquerez Responds: “I Want to Play in Europe”

The problem? Piquerez himself is open to the move. Nicola reports that the full-back sees this summer as his last chance to play in Europe, and the opportunity to join a historic club like Juventus is tempting.

“At 26, he knows this may be the final window to make the leap,” a source close to the player told Nicola.

With that in mind, Palmeiras risks dressing-room tension if they block the move and the club has made it clear: they won’t hold players against their will.

Piquerez by the Numbers (2025)

  • Age: 26
  • Nationality: Uruguay
  • Position: Left-back
  • Club: Palmeiras
  • Contract: Ongoing (renewal negotiations in progress)
  • Market Value: Estimated €10–12 million
  • Titles: Copa Libertadores, Brasileirão, Paulista

Juventus’ World Cup Wake-Up Call

Juve’s campaign at the Club World Cup highlighted the depth issues in the squad. Though they secured wins over Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain, the team was thrashed by Manchester City and ultimately eliminated by Real Madrid.

The loss has triggered an aggressive response from the board, and Piquerez is among the first names on their list as they look to revamp the defense.
