Newcastle’s boss clarifies the Italian midfielder’s commitment on the eve of their crucial Carabao Cup semi-final at the Etihad.

Eddie Howe has moved swiftly to dismiss speculation linking Sandro Tonali with a shock move to Arsenal. As the January transfer window drew to a close, reports emerged that the Italian midfielder had been offered to Mikel Arteta’s side, but the Newcastle manager has firmly “closed the door” on any departure.

“Focused on the Here and Now”

Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s pivotal League Cup clash against Manchester City, Howe expressed his complete confidence in Tonali’s loyalty to the Tyneside project.

“As far as I’m aware, we’ve got a player that’s an outstanding footballer and an outstanding person. He’s very happy here, has a great relationship with me and his teammates, and seems really happy within himself,” Howe stated.

The manager admitted that while Newcastle’s top talents will always attract “glances” from rivals like Arsenal, Tonali remains central to his plans.

The Contract Factor

Arsenal’s interest reportedly fell through due to a lack of time to finalize a deal of such magnitude. With Tonali under contract at St. James’ Park until June 2028, Newcastle holds a strong negotiating position.

  • Season Stats: Tonali has been a workhorse for the Magpies this season, clocking 2,553 minutes across 35 games and providing four key assists.

Focus on the Etihad

The timing of the rumors was far from ideal, as Newcastle prepares to defend their Carabao Cup title in a high-stakes second-leg semi-final. Howe confirmed he has spoken personally with the 25-year-old, ensuring his “absolute focus” is on overcoming the 2-0 aggregate deficit against Pep Guardiola’s side tonight.
