Manchester United are assessing their next move following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim, but a return for former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears unlikely despite recent speculation.
Reports from Manchester World suggest Solskjaer would be open to rejoining the club in an interim role until the end of the season. However, sources close to the situation indicate United do not plan to pursue the Norwegian, as the club’s hierarchy has different priorities for the managerial position.
Solskjaer is no stranger to stepping in during turbulent periods at Old Trafford. He initially took charge on an interim basis in December 2018, guiding the team through an impressive run of results that ultimately earned him a permanent appointment. He later signed a three-year contract and oversaw relatively stable league campaigns, finishing sixth, third, and second in the Premier League before his departure in 2021 following a downturn in form.
According to the report, Solskjaer has maintained a positive relationship with the fan base since leaving the club and could theoretically be viewed as a stabilizing option, with a short-term goal of finishing in the Premier League’s top six. However, there is no indication that formal discussions have taken place, and United are not expected to revisit that chapter.
Manchester United’s Short- and Long-Term Plans
Well-connected journalists such as David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano have played down the likelihood of an interim appointment like Solskjaer. The prevailing expectation is that Manchester United will wait until the end of the season to name a new permanent manager, with planning already underway behind the scenes.
In the meantime, former United midfielder Darren Fletcher has taken charge on a provisional basis as the club evaluates its options. His role is temporary, and the board has yet to make a final decision on the long-term successor to Amorim.
