Barcelona have successfully secured the signing of João Cancelo from Al-Hilal, outmaneuvering Inter Milan in the process. The Portuguese full-back, who had been placed on the Saudi club’s transfer list, will return to Europe on a loan deal this winter.

Cancelo on Al-Hilal’s Transfer List

Cancelo, previously sidelined from Simone Inzaghi’s plans, was considered dispensable by Al-Hilal. Following his availability, Inter Milan quickly approached the player’s representatives and were close to a deal, according to the Italian club president.

However, Barcelona’s management moved decisively, capitalizing on Cancelo’s strong desire to return to Catalonia, and ultimately secured the player’s agreement.

Loan Agreement Finalized

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that the deal is structured as a loan until the end of the current European season, with Barcelona paying approximately €4 million for the player’s services.

The agreement does not include a fixed purchase option, meaning that if Barcelona wish to retain Cancelo permanently, they will need to negotiate separately with Al-Hilal.

Barcelona’s Strategy and Advantage

While Inter Milan had reached a verbal agreement with the Saudi club, they were unable to finalize terms directly with Cancelo, who prioritized a move back to Spain. Barcelona’s proactive approach, combined with the player’s preference, allowed the club to outbid their Italian rivals and secure the transfer swiftly.

Cancelo Returns to European Football

João Cancelo’s return strengthens Barcelona’s defensive options at a time when injuries and rotation issues have affected the flanks. The Portuguese international brings experience from his previous spell at the club and extensive top-level experience in La Liga and European competitions.

With this signing, Barcelona not only reinforce their squad but also demonstrate a clear ability to act decisively in the winter transfer window, even against strong competition from other European clubs.
