Manchester United have begun discussions over a potential return of Mason Greenwood following the dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim, according to reports. The club is entering a new phase after deciding to part ways with the Portuguese manager and is already exploring major changes both on and off the pitch.

United officially confirmed Amorim’s departure on January 5, bringing an end to his 14-month spell at Old Trafford after mounting pressure and inconsistent results.

Manchester United begin rebuild after Amorim exit

With Amorim gone, Manchester United are now assessing options for a new manager. Familiar names such as Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjær are reportedly under consideration as the club looks to restore stability and reconnect with its identity.

However, potential changes are not limited to the dugout. According to MatchDay Central, United’s board has also opened formal talks regarding the possible return of striker Mason Greenwood, a name well known to the Old Trafford faithful.

While negotiations remain at an early stage, the move signals United’s willingness to make bold decisions as part of a broader reset.

Plan in place for Greenwood return next summer

The report claims that Manchester United’s initial plan is to secure Greenwood’s return during the European summer transfer window. Until then, the forward would remain at Olympique Marseille, where he has rebuilt his career since leaving English football.

Marseille signed Greenwood permanently in 2024 for around €26 million. Since then, his market value has risen sharply and is now estimated at €50 million due to his performances in Ligue 1.

However, Portuguese outlet Record reports that the deal between United and Marseille includes a buy-back clause. While the exact figures have not been made public, the clause would allow Manchester United to re-sign Greenwood for a significantly lower fee than his current market valuation.

Greenwood shines in France

Mason Greenwood is under contract with Marseille until June 2029 and has been one of the standout attackers in French football this season. The 24-year-old has featured in 23 matches across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists.

Since arriving in France, Greenwood has registered 37 goals and nine assists in 59 appearances — a total of 46 direct goal contributions — establishing himself as one of Ligue 1’s most effective forwards.

As Manchester United weigh up their next managerial appointment and long-term sporting direction, Greenwood’s potential return could become one of the most debated topics at Old Trafford in the months ahead.
