Van Dijk opens up about Diogo Jota’s death: “It’s strange to play again”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has spoken publicly for the first time about the emotional aftermath of Diogo Jota’s tragic death, saying it still feels “strange” to return to football without his teammate and friend.
The Reds returned to Anfield on Monday (August 4) for a double friendly against Athletic Bilbao, marking the club’s first home appearance since the Portuguese striker and his brother passed away just over a month ago.
“We’ll Think About Him in Every Stadium”
Van Dijk, known for his leadership on and off the pitch, gave a heartfelt statement reflecting the grief still lingering within the squad.
“We’ll think about him during the games and in the different stadiums we visit,” the Dutch defender shared, clearly emotional.
Liverpool has retired Jota’s No. 20 shirt, and his name continues to be listed on the official squad roster a symbolic gesture acknowledging his lasting presence at the club.
Support for the Family First
Van Dijk also underlined the importance of caring for those Jota left behind.
“We have to take care of his parents. We try to be present, supporting each other. They always come first,” he said, highlighting the unity within the Liverpool family.
A Beloved Teammate and Club Icon
Jota, signed in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, quickly became a fan favorite and a crucial part of Liverpool’s attack. He was admired for his versatility, work ethic, and ability to score in decisive moments. In his four seasons at the club, he made a lasting mark both on the pitch and in the locker room.
Since the tragedy, Liverpool has hosted internal ceremonies and tributes, ensuring Jota’s legacy is honored and remembered.
“It’s hard trying to get back to work, keep playing football. We’re dealing with it as a team, but it still feels surreal,” Van Dijk admitted.
