Barcelona are expected to announce the return of João Cancelo in the coming days, but the Portuguese full-back may not be the only reinforcement planned by the Catalan club. Following Cancelo’s arrival, Barça are now assessing a potential move for Hoffenheim striker Fisnik Asllani as part of their plans for next season.
Cancelo, who was no longer part of Simone Inzaghi’s plans at Al-Hilal, is set to return to Barcelona for the remainder of the European campaign. The 31-year-old will rejoin a squad led by Hansi Flick, who has already approved the deal.
João Cancelo set for Barcelona return
During his time at Al-Hilal, João Cancelo featured in 45 matches, registering three goals and 13 assists. His experience, versatility and attacking contribution from full-back were key factors behind Barcelona’s decision to bring him back as the club looks to stabilize its defensive line for the second half of the season.
With Cancelo’s return nearly confirmed, Barcelona’s sporting department has already shifted attention to strengthening other areas of the squad.
Barcelona identify Fisnik Asllani as Lewandowski successor
One of Barça’s main priorities for the 2026 season is the signing of a new number nine. Robert Lewandowski’s contract is approaching its final stage, and a renewal is considered unlikely at this point.
According to E-Notícias, Fisnik Asllani has emerged as one of Hansi Flick’s preferred options. The 23-year-old striker, who currently plays for Hoffenheim, is seen as a promising and financially viable alternative compared to elite-market targets.
Fueling speculation, Asllani was spotted in the stands during Barcelona’s recent 2–0 win over Espanyol, a detail that did not go unnoticed by fans and local media.
Asllani’s rise at Hoffenheim
Fisnik Asllani has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in 17 appearances. Eight of his ten goal contributions have come in league matches, helping Hoffenheim climb to fifth place in the standings.
Developed by Hoffenheim, the striker spent the previous two seasons on loan at Austria Wien and SV 07 Elversberg, where he gained valuable experience before earning a regular role this season.
Lewandowski future remains uncertain
While Barcelona continue to explore options for the future, Lewandowski remains linked with a possible move to Saudi Arabia. Despite renewed interest from the Middle East, the Polish striker is reportedly determined to see out his contract at Camp Nou.
President Joan Laporta is also monitoring high-profile names such as Julián Álvarez and Erling Haaland, but from a financial standpoint, Asllani is viewed as a far more realistic target.
