Manchester United have stepped up their search for a new manager following their elimination from the FA Cup, a setback that intensified internal pressure for immediate changes at Old Trafford. Among the names being seriously considered is a return for Ruud van Nistelrooy, who previously left a positive impression during a short interim spell.

Recent developments suggest that the Dutch coach has sent encouraging signals regarding a potential comeback, making him one of the leading candidates as the club looks to stabilize the season.

Van Nistelrooy Gains Support Inside Old Trafford

Van Nistelrooy remains well regarded by both the club’s hierarchy and sections of the fanbase. His brief period in charge came during the transition between Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, a challenging phase that required calm leadership and quick adaptation.

Despite managing the team for only a handful of matches, his impact was seen as immediately positive, strengthening his candidacy for a longer-term role.

Interim Spell Showed Promising Results

Manchester United initially brought Van Nistelrooy to the club from PSV Eindhoven to serve as Erik ten Hag’s assistant. Following Ten Hag’s departure, the former striker automatically assumed the role of interim head coach in mid-November 2024.

According to data from Transfermarkt, Van Nistelrooy led United in four matches, recording three wins and one draw. He left the role unbeaten, with an impressive 83.3% success rate, a record that continues to resonate positively inside the club.

FA Cup Exit Forces Urgent Decision

The FA Cup elimination acted as a turning point, convincing United’s leadership that a clear managerial direction is urgently needed. The club aims to appoint a coach capable of restoring competitiveness, improving results, and reconnecting the squad with supporters.
