Chelsea full-back Lucy Bronze has opened up about her personal ambitions at the club, stressing her desire to be constantly challenged and to compete against the best players in world football.
The England international shared her thoughts during an interview on Chelsea’s official podcast, as the Blues navigate an inconsistent start to the 2025/26 season. While Chelsea have shown strong form in the Women’s Champions League, their domestic dominance in the Women’s Super League (WSL) has recently come under pressure.
Lucy Bronze on Facing the Best in World Football
Bronze made it clear that competing against elite attackers is a key motivation in her career and something she actively seeks on the pitch.
“I want to be challenged. I think it’s a cliché for defenders to say they want to play against the best strikers in the world, but it’s the truth. To face someone who makes you focus more, who puts more pressure on you, and who makes you better,” Bronze said.
The experienced defender believes that playing against top-level opposition sharpens her performance and pushes her to continuously improve, both defensively and offensively.
Bronze Highlights Competitive Mentality
The Chelsea defender also reflected on how her competitive mindset was shaped from a young age. According to Bronze, growing up playing multiple sports alongside her older brother played a significant role in her development.
“I think I’ve always had this mentality since I was young, because I played football and practiced other sports with my brother, who is two years older than me. He never let me win, but he was never cruel to me, so I developed very well in that environment,” she explained.
That early exposure to competition, she says, helped build the resilience and determination that define her game today.
Lucy Bronze’s 2025/26 Season Stats
Despite playing primarily as a full-back, Bronze has continued to contribute in attack this season. So far in the 2025/26 campaign, she has made 15 appearances, including 11 matches for Chelsea and four for England. Across all competitions, she has recorded three goals and one assist, underlining her impact at both ends of the pitch.
Chelsea’s Season So Far
Chelsea’s hold on the Women’s Super League title is under threat after six consecutive championship wins. The Blues currently sit second in the WSL with 24 points, trailing leaders Manchester City by six points.
In contrast, Chelsea’s European campaign has been more stable. Despite some mixed performances, the club finished third in the Women’s Champions League league phase, securing direct qualification for the quarter-finals.
As Chelsea continue to fight on both domestic and European fronts, Lucy Bronze’s leadership and competitive drive remain central to the club’s ambitions.
