Messi overtakes Luis Díaz as top scorer in South American qualifiers

Lionel Messi scored twice in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela, becoming the outright top scorer of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers with eight goals.
Monumental farewell with goals
In a packed Monumental de Núñez, Messi gave fans the farewell they dreamed of. The Argentine legend netted twice, surpassing Colombia’s Luis Díaz, who has seven goals. Bolivian striker Miguelito follows with six.
Goal disallowed and decisive plays
Messi almost celebrated a hat-trick. He had a third goal ruled out for offside in the 88th minute. Earlier, he also played a key role in Lautaro Martínez’s strike, delivering the free kick that Nico González redirected for the forward’s header.
Rested for Ecuador clash
Argentina, already qualified, will close the South American Qualifiers next Tuesday (9) against Ecuador in Guayaquil. Messi, however, confirmed he will not play:
“I spoke with (Lionel) Scaloni, and he decided to give me a rest,” the captain revealed after the match.
