Manchester United considered Danny Welbeck’s return to Old Trafford, says journalist

Manchester United evaluated the possibility of bringing back Danny Welbeck during the summer transfer window, according to journalist Laurie Whitwell from The Athletic. The striker, a product of the club’s academy in the 2000s, currently plays for Brighton and has a contract until June 2026.

United Reinforce the Attack with New Signings

Although not among the highest spenders, United focused on strengthening manager Ruben Amorim’s attack. The club secured Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko, three reinforcements aimed at solving the team’s lack of goals.

In the final days of the window, the Red Devils also signed young goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Welbeck on the Radar

Welbeck, now 33, delivered solid numbers last season: 11 goals and four assists in 36 matches for Brighton. His profile was discussed internally as an experienced option to add depth, but the club ultimately prioritized younger arrivals to lead the attack.

Departures and Squad Adjustments

The arrival of Sesko pushed Rasmus Højlund out on loan to Napoli until June 2026. Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee remained as an immediate backup despite underwhelming performances last season. Matheus Cunha, who left the last match injured, could also be an alternative in the central role when fit.
