Luis Suárez shines for Colombia and emerges as Gyökeres’ successor at Sporting

Colombian striker Luis Suárez, recently signed by Sporting CP to replace Viktor Gyökeres, scored four goals against Venezuela and is enjoying the best form of his career.

Four-Goal Masterclass Against Venezuela

Luis Suárez was the standout performer in Colombia’s 6-3 win over Venezuela on Tuesday (09), closing the World Cup qualifiers in style. The 27-year-old striker netted four times, becoming only the sixth player in history to score four or more goals in a World Cup qualifying match.

From Almería to Sporting Success

Not to be confused with the Uruguayan star of the same name, this Luis Suárez is writing his own chapter in European football. After three seasons at Almería, where he scored 31 goals and added eight assists in 43 appearances last year—his career-best campaign—Suárez moved to Sporting this summer in a €22 million deal.

Signed to replace Viktor Gyökeres, who joined Arsenal, Suárez has already played in all five of Sporting’s matches this season, registering two goals and two assists.

European Journey

Suárez’s European career began in Spain with Real Zaragoza, where he tallied 19 goals in one season. He later played for Granada and Nàstic before establishing himself at Almería. His consistency caught the eye of Sporting, who see him as the ideal successor to their departed Swedish star.

Prime Years Ahead

At 27, Suárez is entering the peak of his career. His physical presence, finishing ability, and confidence in front of goal suggest that both Sporting CP and Colombia could benefit from his rise in form heading into the 2026 World Cup.
