Liverpool target Marc Guéhi furious with Crystal Palace after transfer collapse and ready to give up captaincy

Marc Guéhi’s expected move to Liverpool fell apart dramatically on the final day of the transfer window, and the defender is now said to be furious with Crystal Palace. According to the Mirror, Guéhi is even considering giving up the captain’s armband following the late U-turn.
Deal collapsed after medical completed
The 25-year-old centre-back had already completed a medical with Liverpool and all the documents were prepared for a €40.2 million transfer. Palace, however, pulled the plug at the last moment, frustrating Arne Slot’s plans for defensive reinforcements at Anfield
Guéhi, who scored three goals and provided two assists in 44 appearances last season, is currently valued at €45 million by Transfermarkt the highest of his career.
Glasner blocked the move
Reports in England suggest that manager Oliver Glasner played a decisive role in blocking the sale, as he did not want to lose his defensive leader without a suitable replacement. Palace had lined up Igor Júlio from Brighton, but the deal collapsed after the Brazilian failed his medical.
With no alternative available, the club informed Guéhi he would be staying a decision that left the defender frustrated about his future.
Contract situation raises uncertainty
Guéhi’s contract with Palace runs until June 2026, but the situation could become problematic if the club fails to extend it. From January 2026, he would be free to sign a pre-contract with another team, potentially leaving for nothing.
Focus turns to England duty
Despite the turmoil, Guéhi is now with the England national team, after being called up by coach Thomas Tuchel for the World Cup qualifiers. The Three Lions face Andorra and Serbia in this international window as they look to maintain their perfect record at the top of Group K.
