Lionel Messi talks with Scaloni and is released from the Argentina national team before the World Cup

Lionel Messi gave Argentina fans an unforgettable farewell performance in Buenos Aires — and then confirmed he will not play the next Qualifiers match against Ecuador after a conversation with coach Lionel Scaloni.

Messi shines in farewell at Monumental

On Thursday night (4), at the Estadio Más Monumental, Messi led Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Venezuela in the South American Qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The captain scored twice, at the 39th and 80th minutes, thrilling fans in what felt like a symbolic farewell in front of his people.

Argentina already sits comfortably at the top of the table with 38 points, 10 ahead of second-placed Brazil.

Why Messi will not face Ecuador

After the match, Messi explained that he had spoken directly with Scaloni about managing his minutes. Both agreed it was wiser to rest him for the upcoming game against Ecuador.

“I spoke with Scaloni, and he decided to give me a break,” said the number 10 in a post-match press conference.

The decision is also linked to Messi’s commitments with Inter Miami in MLS, where he continues his push to win the league title. Ensuring peak fitness is part of his plan to remain decisive at both club and international level.

Argentina’s next game

Argentina, already qualified for the World Cup, will play Ecuador on Tuesday, September 9, at the Monumental Banco Pichincha stadium in Guayaquil. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (Brasília time).

While the result will not change Argentina’s qualification status, Scaloni considers every match crucial preparation for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
