Erik ten Hag criticizes Bayer Leverkusen board after shocking dismissal: “No trust, no time”

Just two Bundesliga matches into the new season, Bayer Leverkusen have dismissed Erik ten Hag a decision that left the Dutch coach stunned.

“Firing After Two Games Is Unprecedented”

Through his press office, Ten Hag issued a strong statement criticizing the club’s leadership.

“Bayer Leverkusen’s decision this morning to dismiss me came as a complete surprise. Firing a coach after just two league matches is unprecedented,” he declared.

The former Ajax and Manchester United manager stressed that rebuilding a squad after the departure of stars like Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah requires patience.

“Building a new, cohesive team is a careful process that requires time and trust. A new coach deserves space to implement his vision, set standards, shape the squad, and leave his mark on the style of play.”

Criticism of Board’s Lack of Confidence

Ten Hag admitted he started the project with “conviction and energy,” but lamented the lack of faith from the board.

“Unfortunately, the board was unwilling to give me the time and trust I needed. I feel this was never a relationship based on mutual trust,” he said.

The coach highlighted that at Ajax and Manchester United, long-term confidence resulted in silverware something he believes Leverkusen will miss out on by cutting ties so early.

Short-Lived Spell in Germany

Ten Hag only took charge of Leverkusen in a whirlwind appointment this summer after being linked with Feyenoord, Roma, and RB Leipzig. His tenure lasted just eight matches overall (including preseason):

  • Bundesliga: 1–2 loss to Hoffenheim, 3–3 draw with Werder Bremen
  • DFB-Pokal: 4–0 win over Sonnenhof-Großaspach
  • European qualifiers: 1 win, 1 draw, 1 defeat

Despite the modest start, the coach insists he deserved more time to leave his mark.
