Donnarumma reveals why he chose Manchester City and underlines Guardiola’s trust

Manchester City’s new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has explained his decision to join the Premier League champions, highlighting Pep Guardiola’s decisive role in bringing him to the Etihad. The 26-year-old signed a contract until 2030, with an option for one more season until 2031.

City moved quickly for the Italian after agreeing to sell Ederson to Fenerbahçe, securing Donnarumma despite strong interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United, according to local media.

“Pep wanted me there”

In his presentation, Donnarumma emphasized the importance of Guardiola’s trust in his choice:

“Honestly, I really wanted to join Manchester City… they wanted me, I felt their strong interest, and Pep Guardiola really trusted me. Pep wanted me there and I can only be proud of that. Playing at the Etihad will be very special for me.”

The goalkeeper arrives at City after a turbulent final year at PSG, where off-field issues overshadowed his performances, despite remaining a key starter for both club and Italy.

Contract details and performance at PSG

According to Fabrizio Romano, Donnarumma’s deal runs until 2030, with the option to extend until 2031. Last season, he played 47 of PSG’s 65 matches, conceding 43 goals (0.91 per game) in 4,192 minutes.

Although he impressed with decisive saves, comparisons with Ederson have raised some doubts. While the Brazilian routinely averaged 30–50 passes per game in the Premier League, Donnarumma averaged only 25–30 in Ligue 1. His adaptation to Guardiola’s possession-based style will be closely watched.

A new challenge at the Etihad

Donnarumma now faces the challenge of becoming the long-term successor to Ederson and proving himself in English football. With Guardiola’s backing and City’s ambitions for another Champions League title, the Italian has the opportunity to take his career to the next level.
