Manchester United has reportedly kept Atletico Madrid’s rising star Pablo Barrios at the top of their transfer shortlist, despite the recent managerial shift at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old Spanish midfielder was originally a priority target for former manager Ruben Amorim. However, according to TEAMtalk, the interest remains “concrete” under interim boss Michael Carrick, as the club continues its search for technical quality and tactical intelligence in the middle of the park.
From Gallagher to Barrios
United’s pursuit of a midfield anchor at the Metropolitano is not new. The Red Devils previously made an ambitious move for Conor Gallagher, but the England international ultimately opted for a move to Tottenham. Following that setback, United shifted their focus entirely to Barrios, who has arguably become an even more vital part of Diego Simeone’s plans.
The €120 Million Obstacle

Securing Barrios will require a record-breaking effort. Atletico Madrid has no intention of negotiating for their academy graduate, pointing interested parties directly to his €120 million (£105m) release clause.
For Manchester United, this valuation is a significant hurdle, especially with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations in mind. However, the club’s board believes Barrios’ profile combining defensive grit with elite ball progression is exactly what the squad needs to bridge the gap to the Premier League’s top four.
Rival Interest from City and PSG
Manchester United isn’t the only giant monitoring the situation. Both Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly keeping tabs on the Spaniard. With Kevin De Bruyne’s future uncertain at City and PSG looking for young, high-ceiling talent, the race for Barrios is set to be one of the biggest stories of the 2026 summer window.
