Ángel Di María has heaped praise on Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni, suggesting he deserves a “lifetime contract” after guiding the Albiceleste to their greatest era in decades.
Di María’s admiration for Scaloni
Speaking to TyC Sports, Di María who retired from international duty after the 2022 World Cup triumph highlighted Scaloni’s impact on the team.
“We should give him a lifetime contract. For everything he’s achieved, everything he’s doing, the number of players he’s bringing in. I hope he stays for many years,” said the 36-year-old Rosario Central midfielder.
A veteran of three World Cups and two Copa América titles, Di María was part of a generation often criticized for falling short in finals. He credits Scaloni for changing the mentality and finally ending Argentina’s title drought.
Scaloni’s remarkable record
Scaloni, once a modest right-back with just eight caps for Argentina, took charge in 2018 with no prior head coaching experience. Since then, he has built a golden era:
- 2021 Copa América champion
- 2022 FIFA World Cup winner
- 2024 Copa América champion
Before his arrival, Argentina had not won a senior trophy since 1993. Under Scaloni, the Albiceleste have played 88 matches: 62 wins, 18 draws, 8 defeats.
What’s next for Argentina
Already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, Argentina will face Ecuador this Tuesday (Sept 9) at 8 PM (Brasília time) in the final round of the qualifiers. Both teams are already assured of a spot in the tournament, but Lionel Messi and company are keen to finish on a high.
