Bayer Leverkusen fires Erik Ten Hag after two Bundesliga games and Flamengo humiliation

Erik ten Hag has been sacked by Bayer Leverkusen just two months into the job. A poor Bundesliga start and a 5-1 preseason thrashing by Flamengo’s U20 side sealed his fate.

Leverkusen Confirms Ten Hag’s Dismissal

Bayer Leverkusen announced on Monday (01) that Erik ten Hag has been dismissed with immediate effect, after just two official matches in charge. The Dutch manager oversaw a draw and a defeat in the Bundesliga, leaving the team struggling early in the campaign.

In a statement, the club declared: “Bayer 04 has dismissed coach Erik ten Hag with immediate effect. The assistant coaching staff will temporarily take over coaching duties.”

The decision comes only months after Ten Hag was dismissed by Manchester United, making this his second sacking in under a year.

Flamengo Humiliation Still Looms Large

Although the Bundesliga results were disappointing, the breaking point was the embarrassing 5-1 preseason defeat against Flamengo’s U20 team in July.

The heavy loss exposed tactical flaws, lack of cohesion, and poor preparation under Ten Hag. Flamengo’s youngsters dominated, with goals from Lorran, Pedro Leão, Gusttavo, Matheus Gonçalves, and an own goal by Culbreath — a dark chapter that haunted the coach throughout his short tenure.

Interim Coach and Search for a Replacement

With Ten Hag gone, assistant Rogier Meijer will take over training sessions. The club intends to use the FIFA international break to evaluate options and appoint a permanent head coach before the September 12 clash against Eintracht Frankfurt, who currently sit near the top of the Bundesliga table.

Ten Hag’s Reputation Takes Another Hit

After his underwhelming spell at Manchester United, Ten Hag’s rapid dismissal in Germany adds to growing doubts about his methods at the elite level. What was meant to be a fresh start at Leverkusen has instead left the Dutch coach’s reputation more fragile than ever.
