Alexander Isak becomes the most expensive signing in Premier League history

Liverpool have smashed the transfer record by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for €150 million. The Swedish striker’s arrival makes him the most expensive player in Premier League history, overtaking recent record holders in a dramatic deadline-day move.
Breaking the Premier League Record
Liverpool’s €150m deal for the 25-year-old striker not only rewrites club history but also reshapes the Premier League’s list of biggest-ever transfers. Just hours earlier, teammate Florian Wirtz had briefly claimed top spot with his €125m switch from Bayer Leverkusen. Before that, Enzo Fernández’s €121m move to Chelsea had led the rankings since 2023.

Entering the Global Top 3
In a worldwide context, Isak’s move is now the third most expensive transfer in football history. Only Neymar (€222m to PSG) and Kylian Mbappé (€180m to PSG) rank above him, while Ousmane Dembélé (€148m) and Philippe Coutinho (€135m) complete the top five.
Liverpool’s Record-Breaking Window
The signing of Isak caps off a stunning summer for Liverpool, who spent a total of €483 million. Alongside the Swedish striker, the club secured Wirtz (€125m) and Ekitiké (€95m), making them the three biggest deals of the entire window.
The spree could have been even larger, surpassing half a billion euros, had the club completed a €35m move for Marc Guehi. The Crystal Palace defender’s transfer collapsed when the Eagles failed to find a replacement, with manager Oliver Glasner insisting on keeping his captain.
Premier League Dominance in the Market
This summer, nine of the 10 most expensive transfers worldwide came from the Premier League, underlining its financial dominance. The only exception was Turkey’s Galatasaray, who secured Victor Osimhen for €75m, breaking into the top six.
Among Brazilian players, Matheus Cunha also ranked high, sealing a €74m move to Manchester United after impressing with Wolverhampton last season.
