Target of Barcelona, Manchester City and Bayern, Rafael Leão ends saga and wants to stay at Milan

Barcelona, Man City, and Bayern miss out as Portuguese star commits to Allegri’s new project

AC Milan forward Rafael Leão has decided to remain at San Siro for the upcoming European season, ending months of speculation linking him with a move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.

As reported by TBR Football on Wednesday (August 6), the 26-year-old Portugal international has opted to stay at Milan, despite growing interest from several top sides. Leão is reportedly excited by the opportunity to work under returning head coach Massimiliano Allegri and wants to see the club’s new direction unfold before considering a potential transfer.

European Giants Showed Interest

Barcelona initially explored the possibility of signing Leão but were blocked by financial constraints. Bayern Munich and Tottenham also monitored the striker’s situation, with Manchester City being the latest club to make inquiries. However, none of the offers or approaches made a strong enough impression on the player.

Sources close to the situation indicate that Leão is open to a change of scenery in the future, but does not view this summer as the right time to move.

Allegri Project Convincing the Forward

Leão sees Allegri’s return to Milan as a turning point for the club, which has struggled to consistently compete for major honors in recent years. According to TBR Football, the Portuguese star wants to be a central figure in Milan’s attempt to re-establish themselves as a force in Italy and Europe.

The feeling is said to be mutual. Allegri reportedly views Leão as indispensable to his system and believes the winger’s athleticism and creativity will be key to Milan’s domestic and continental ambitions.

Saudi Arabia Not an Option

Despite previous speculation linking Leão to Saudi Arabian sides like Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal, a move outside Europe is not currently being considered. The player has made it clear that he believes the highest level of football remains in Europe and that it’s too early in his career to depart the continent.

Long-Term Deal and Massive Release Clause

Leão is under contract with Milan until June 2028. His deal includes a €175 million release clause, making him one of the most expensive players in Serie A. Last season, the forward contributed 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions, solidifying his status as one of Milan’s most important players.

Unless Milan falls short under Allegri’s leadership, Leão is expected to remain a central figure in the club’s future—at least for now.
