Samu Aghehowa rejects €100 million offer from Newcastle to stay at Porto

Porto striker Samu Aghehowa has turned down a €100 million bid from Newcastle United, opting to remain with the Portuguese champions despite interest from the Premier League. The 22-year-old Spaniard, whose release clause matches the offer, is under contract at Estádio do Dragão until 2029.

Loyalty over Premier League temptation

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Samu chose to prioritise Porto’s sporting project and his bond with the squad over a move to England. The forward is focused on leading the Dragons in the 2025/26 season and continuing the momentum built since joining the club.

Newcastle’s transfer frustrations continue

The rejection marks another setback for Newcastle in a challenging summer window, after failed moves for Benjamin Sesko, Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitiké and Bryan Mbeumo. The club’s urgency to sign a top striker has increased, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s future amid interest from Arsenal and PSG.

Samu’s impressive record

Since arriving from Alavés, Samu has played 45 matches for Porto, scoring 27 goals and providing three assists. His form with both club and the Spanish national team has significantly boosted his market value and profile in European football.

A statement of intent

Samu’s decision sends a clear message: his career choices are guided by stability and sporting progression rather than purely financial gain. For Porto, retaining one of their key attacking assets strengthens their ambitions at domestic and European level.
