Portuguese full-back João Cancelo could be on his way to Fenerbahçe

João Cancelo could make a surprise return to European football, with Fenerbahçe and manager José Mourinho leading the race to sign the Portuguese full-back, according to Sabah. The 31-year-old is reportedly open to taking a significant pay cut to facilitate the move, prioritizing competitive football over financial gain.

Cancelo Wants Out of Saudi Arabia

Cancelo joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in 2024 for €25 million (approx. R$160 million), signing a deal valid through 2027 and earning €15 million per year (approx. R$96 million). Despite the lucrative contract, the former Manchester City and Bayern Munich player is said to be unsettled and eager to return to top-level European football.

The Portuguese international spent just one season in Saudi Arabia before beginning talks over a possible exit.

Mourinho’s Role Key in Negotiations

At Fenerbahçe, José Mourinho is reportedly the driving force behind the club’s push to sign Cancelo. The experienced coach has long admired the full-back’s technical versatility and attacking output, and he is playing a direct role in convincing the player to join the Turkish side.

Sources close to the negotiations suggest that Mourinho’s presence could be decisive, especially as Cancelo prioritizes a sporting project with strong ambitions.

Barcelona Also Interested

While Fenerbahçe appear to be in pole position, Barcelona are also monitoring the situation. The La Liga giants are reportedly still interested in Cancelo after his loan spell at the Camp Nou in 2023/24. However, financial constraints could make the Turkish club’s offer more competitive in terms of playing time and immediate plans.

Cancelo’s current market value is estimated at €15 million (approx. R$96 million), according to Transfermarkt.
