Mourinho is fired from Fenerbahçe after elimination in the Champions League and tries to sign Rodrygo, Brahim and Alaba

José Mourinho is now a free agent. The Portuguese coach was dismissed by Fenerbahçe this week following the team’s elimination by Benfica in the Champions League qualifying stage. The disappointing result prompted the club’s management to act, even though Mourinho still had one year left on his contract.

Mixed Record at Fenerbahçe

Mourinho joined Fenerbahçe in June 2024 with the goal of restoring the team’s European competitiveness. In total, he managed 62 matches, achieving 32 wins, 14 draws, and 11 losses. This season started poorly, with just two wins in six matches.
Last season, his record was stronger: 56 games, 35 wins, and 128 goals scored. However, defensive inconsistencies and losing the domestic title to Galatasaray weighed heavily on his tenure.

Transfer Market Moves

According to Diario AS and Fichajes, Mourinho attempted to strengthen his squad with high-profile Real Madrid players, including Rodrygo, Brahim Díaz, and David Alaba.

  • Alaba’s future is uncertain, with club president Florentino Pérez reportedly considering a sale.
  • Brahim Díaz received guidance from Xabi Alonso about his role in the team.
  • Rodrygo remains eager for playing time under Xabi Alonso and has been linked to Liverpool, Tottenham, and Manchester City.

Frustration Mounts

Unable to secure his targeted signings and eliminated early from the Champions League, Mourinho could not sustain his project in Istanbul. The loss to Benfica was a decisive factor in the board’s decision to terminate his contract.
