Midfielder Gavi leaves Barcelona training with knee problems

Barcelona midfielder Gavi left training on Friday (29) due to knee pain, raising doubts about his availability for the weekend’s La Liga clash against Rayo Vallecano. Initial medical checks suggest the problem is not serious, but further tests are planned.

Gavi’s injury history raises concern

According to Catalunya Ràdio and Marca, the 20-year-old was unable to finish the session after reporting discomfort in one of his knees. It is not yet confirmed whether the issue is in the same right knee where he suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament tear while playing for Spain last year.

The long recovery from that injury already forced Gavi to miss much of the previous season, which makes Barcelona especially cautious.

Possible absence against Rayo Vallecano

With the setback, Gavi has become a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Vallecano. Coach Hansi Flick is already without goalkeeper Ter Stegen and midfielder Marc Bernal, while new signing Wojciech Szczesny still faces registration issues. Adjustments in midfield may therefore be necessary.

Spain also monitoring the situation

The Spanish national team, which recently called Gavi for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Turkey, is also closely following the situation. Coach Luis de la Fuente may need to rethink his squad if Barcelona’s midfielder is not cleared by medical staff.

For now, the club insists the injury is not considered serious, but both Barcelona and Spain will wait for the final test results before making a decision.
