Real Madrid receives approval from Xabi Alonso and agrees to swap Rodrygo for Liverpool’s Konaté

Real Madrid is reportedly open to swapping Brazilian forward Rodrygo Goes for Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, following approval from new head coach Xabi Alonso. According to reports from Defensa Central, the Spanish club sees the deal as an opportunity to reinforce its defense during the current transfer window.

Although Rodrygo has been a key player in recent seasons, he has seen reduced prominence since Alonso took over. A move to the Premier League could now be on the cards, with Konaté emerging as a high-priority target for Real Madrid’s backline overhaul.

Xabi Alonso Approves Swap Plan

Sources close to the club confirm that Xabi Alonso has greenlit the potential deal, seeing Konaté as an ideal fit to strengthen Madrid’s central defense. The French international, under contract with Liverpool until June 2026, could be entering his final season at Anfield if the club opts to negotiate.

Real Madrid believes that including Rodrygo in the operation could lower the total cash outlay required. However, they will still demand a financial compensation from Liverpool, recognizing Rodrygo’s higher market value and younger age.

Performance Comparison: Rodrygo vs. Konaté

During the 2024/25 season, Rodrygo, 24, made 54 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing 10 assists across all competitions. Despite being left out of the Club World Cup squad, he remained an important rotational option.

Meanwhile, Konaté, 26, featured in 42 matches under new Reds manager Arne Slot, contributing 2 goals and 2 assists. The former RB Leipzig defender has been a regular fixture since joining Liverpool in 2021, known for his physical presence and aerial dominance.

Deal Not Final Yet

Although both clubs reportedly see the swap deal favorably, no agreement has been finalized. One potential obstacle is Konaté’s contract duration, which still runs for another season beyond this one. Real Madrid is cautious and wants adequate value in return, either via an added transfer fee or contract renegotiations.

Madrid Still Targeting Rodri

In parallel, Real Madrid continues its pursuit of Rodri Hernández from Manchester City, another player Alonso considers essential for his midfield plans. The Spanish midfielder is reportedly open to joining the club, but negotiations with City remain complex and delicate.
