Marcus Rashford eyes career revival at Barcelona, inspired by Antony’s comeback trajectory

English forward bets on versatility and fresh motivation to become a key figure under Hansi Flick

Marcus Rashford has arrived at Barcelona determined to relaunch his career and he’s drawing inspiration from fellow former Manchester United winger Antony’s successful revival in La Liga. The 27-year-old forward, on loan from United with an option to buy for €30–35 million, netted his first goal for the Blaugrana in a pre-season friendly against Daegu, a strike that could signal the start of a new chapter.

From United Promise to Uncertain Future

Once one of England’s brightest prospects, Rashford burst into United’s first team nine years ago after progressing through their academy. But last season, his role diminished sharply and tensions grew with manager Rúben Amorim, culminating in a frosty public remark that he’d “rather use a goalkeeping coach” than an underperforming player.

The fallout led to a winter loan move to Aston Villa, but Rashford’s long-term future was always expected to lie elsewhere. Barcelona made an earlier approach in January, and this summer finally secured the forward’s services.

Inspired by Antony’s La Liga Success

Rashford’s reference point is Antony another United player whose career had stalled before finding a resurgence in Spain. After leaving Old Trafford for Real Betis, the Brazilian regained form and confidence, proving there is life after United under the right environment.
For Rashford, Barcelona offers that chance. “I received other offers, but my decision was clear; I want to win, and I believe this is the perfect place,” he said.

A Tactical Asset for Hansi Flick

During pre-season, Rashford has impressed as a central striker in Robert Lewandowski’s absence, but his ability to operate across all three attacking positions makes him a valuable tactical weapon for Hansi Flick. Initially set to cover for Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, he aims to secure regular minutes by delivering consistent performances.

Last season exposed Barcelona’s need for a reliable third forward to rotate with their stars. Rashford’s energy, experience, and finishing ability could make him that player if he can rediscover the sharpness that once made him a feared Premier League attacker.

A Fresh Start in a Team on the Rise

Joining a youthful Barcelona side chasing both domestic and European success, Rashford sees himself as part of a bigger project. His early showings on the Asian tour capped by his goal in Daegu suggest he’s ready to embrace the challenge. Whether this becomes the full-scale redemption he’s seeking will depend on maintaining form in La Liga’s demanding season ahead.
