Jude Bellingham to Undergo Shoulder Surgery and Miss Real Madrid’s Season Opener

Midfielder played through injury for nearly two years and will now be sidelined for up to three months
Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham is set to undergo shoulder surgery this Wednesday (July 16) in London, according to Spanish outlet AS. The England international has been managing the injury for almost two years and is now taking steps to fully recover ahead of the bulk of the 2025/26 campaign.
Bellingham first suffered the injury in November 2023 during a La Liga match against Rayo Vallecano. After awkwardly landing while attempting a chest pass, the midfielder dislocated his shoulder. Despite medical advice, the 21-year-old opted to delay surgery and continued playing with the aid of a supportive bandage.
Since then, Bellingham has featured in 100 competitive matches 86 for Real Madrid and 14 for the England national team while managing discomfort in the affected area. He recently reached his physical limit during the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where Real Madrid were eliminated in the semifinal by PSG.
“I have an operation scheduled for after the Club World Cup,” Bellingham revealed during the tournament. “I’ve been waiting a long time, and my patience is running out. The doctors and physiotherapists have been incredible, helping me through every game. But I want to feel free now.”
Estimated Recovery Timeline
Following the operation, Bellingham is expected to be sidelined for two to three months, which means he will miss the start of the 2025/26 season under new manager Xabi Alonso. Despite the setback, the midfielder has already impressed the Spanish coach with his performances in the Club World Cup and remains a key figure in Madrid’s long-term project.
What This Means for Real Madrid
With Bellingham’s temporary absence, Xabi Alonso may need to adjust his midfield setup heading into La Liga’s opening rounds. The club is also contending with other injuries, including Endrick’s recurring muscle issues and Modric’s recent departure, marking a critical period of transition.
