Emotional Álvaro Carreras Presented at Real Madrid: “I Left Here a Boy and Return a Man”

Spanish full-back returns to Madrid in €50 million move from Benfica and promises to honor the club that shaped him
Real Madrid officially unveiled Álvaro Carreras as their newest signing on Tuesday (July 15) at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The 21-year-old left-back, who returns to the club after a spell with Benfica, was visibly emotional during the presentation, reflecting on his journey from Madrid’s youth ranks to becoming one of Europe’s top defensive prospects.
Wearing the No. 18 shirt, Carreras took the stage alongside club president Florentino Pérez and delivered heartfelt remarks that left both the player and his family in tears.
“I left here a boy and return a man,” said Carreras, choking up as he looked into the stands. “It’s an honor to wear the jersey of the best club in the world.”
Gratitude to Benfica and Praise for Di María
While fulfilling his dream of rejoining Real Madrid, Carreras made a point to express deep gratitude to Benfica, the club that helped launch his senior career.
“When I joined Benfica, I signed for several years. I was happy there. I had to respect the club that gave me everything,” he stated. “I’ll always be grateful to them. I made great friends there, but life moves on. Today is the happiest day of my life.”
The Spanish defender also paid tribute to his former teammate Ángel Di María, with whom he shared the pitch in Portugal.
“Angelito was a great teammate on and off the field. He respected and supported me from day one. I’ll always be thankful to him.”
Florentino Pérez Welcomes Carreras Back to Madrid
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez addressed fans during the ceremony, highlighting Carreras’ homecoming as a milestone for the club.
“Today is a special day for all Madridistas. Bringing back a homegrown player who has grown into one of the best defenders in Europe is something we’re proud of,” said Pérez. “This new era begins with ambition and excitement.”
Pérez also reminded fans of the club’s ongoing squad reinforcement efforts:
“For the 2025/26 season, we’ve already signed Trent, Huijsen, and Mastantuono, and hired Xabi Alonso, one of the best coaches in the world. Today, we welcome Álvaro Carreras back to where it all started.”
Carreras’ Career Path: From Madrid Youth to European Recognition
Carreras began his youth career at Deportivo La Coruña, joined Real Madrid’s academy in 2017, and moved to Manchester United in 2020. He was later loaned to Preston North End before sealing a transfer to Benfica in 2024.
His performances in Portugal quickly drew attention from Europe’s elite, with Real Madrid moving swiftly to activate his €50 million release clause. The deal is structured in installments, and final approval is pending Manchester United’s decision on a buyback clause.
What’s Next for Carreras at Real Madrid?
The young full-back joins a squad in transition under new manager Xabi Alonso, and is expected to compete for the starting role on the left flank. With Ferland Mendy struggling with injuries and Fran García yet to solidify his place, Carreras could be a key piece in the new project.
