Manchester United reject Napoli’s bid for Joshua Zirkzee

Napoli identified Joshua Zirkzee as Romelu Lukaku’s replacement after the Belgian’s injury, but Manchester United quickly shut down the move. Ruben Amorim considers the Dutch striker untouchable this season.

United blocks Napoli’s plans

Napoli made an approach for Joshua Zirkzee, according to Marco Conterio (Tutto Mercato). With Romelu Lukaku sidelined by a serious injury, Antonio Conte had earmarked the Manchester United striker as his top target. However, the Red Devils refused to negotiate.

Instead, United’s board indicated they would only consider selling Rasmus Højlund, who is already in talks with AC Milan. So far, no formal response has been given by the Italian side.

Zirkzee remains in Amorim’s plans

Despite scoring just 7 goals in 49 appearances last season, United’s staff see potential in the 24-year-old. New coach Ruben Amorim believes Zirkzee can improve with competition and by training alongside Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo, three attackers who combined for 79 goals last season.

Although Zirkzee is not expected to start immediately Sesko should lead the attack Amorim values his versatility and views internal competition as a key factor in his development.
