Luis Suárez talks about retirement plans with Messi at Inter Miami

Uruguayan striker hopes to end career alongside Argentine star but stresses decision depends on contracts and fitness
Inter Miami forward Luis Suárez has revealed his desire to end his career alongside long-time friend and former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi. The 38-year-old admitted the idea is appealing but insisted that the decision will depend on both players’ physical condition and contract situations.
Retirement in 2026?
Both Suárez and Messi are under contract with Inter Miami until the end of the 2025 season. Club sources confirm that negotiations are underway for a potential extension for Messi, while Suárez remains focused on his performances this year before making a final decision.
“I would love to retire with Leo, but it depends on his renewal, my renewal, and how we both feel physically,” Suárez explained. “We’re grown men now, and each of us will make the decision that’s best for our well-being.”
Suárez Focused on Present
Despite speculation about retirement, the Uruguayan forward emphasized that he is still motivated to contribute to the team.
“I feel happy, I feel good physically, and I think I’m helping the team,” Suárez said, highlighting his commitment to Inter Miami’s ambitions.
Strengthening Inter Miami’s Legacy
Beyond his personal future, Suárez stressed the importance of Inter Miami continuing to attract top talent to strengthen Major League Soccer. “In football, you make plans, sometimes they work out and sometimes they don’t. What’s important is that the club stays competitive,” he added.
Messi’s Fitness and Inter Miami’s Next Challenge
As Suárez weighs his future, Messi is recovering from a minor muscle injury but could still feature in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals against Tigres, according to coach Javier Mascherano.
The duo already helped Inter Miami lift the 2023 Leagues Cup, defeating Nashville SC on penalties. Now, they aim to maintain momentum and cement their status as pioneers in raising the level of North American soccer.
