Inter Miami confirms Messi’s injury and gives no timetable for his return

Superstar was subbed off just 11 minutes into Leagues Cup clash against Necaxa

Inter Miami confirmed on Monday (4) that Lionel Messi suffered a muscle injury in his right leg during the Leagues Cup match against Necaxa last Saturday (2). The club has not set a recovery timeline, stating his return will depend on medical evaluations and treatment response.

“Messi underwent tests that confirmed a minor muscle injury. His progress will be monitored daily,” the club said in an official statement.

Early Substitution Raises Alarms

Messi, 38, was forced to leave the pitch just 11 minutes into the match after a collision with defenders Raúl Sánchez and Alexis Peña inside the box. The Argentine immediately signaled pain and discomfort, lying on the ground and hitting the turf with his hand before being escorted straight to the locker room.

He did not return to the bench for the remainder of the game.

Mascherano: “It’s Not as Bad as We Feared”

Following the 2-2 draw which Inter Miami won on penalties 5-4 — coach Javier Mascherano spoke cautiously about the injury:

“It didn’t look good at first, but thankfully, it’s not as serious as we feared,” said Mascherano, who also emphasized the importance of a cautious recovery process given Messi’s age and importance to the squad.

Key Player for Inter Miami

Messi has been the standout performer for Inter Miami this season, especially in the Leagues Cup, where his goals and assists have powered the team’s campaign. His absence creates a major gap in the squad as the tournament continues.

While fans await further updates, the club is focused on ensuring a safe and complete recovery for their star player.
