Frenkie De Jong is expected to renew with Barcelona until 2028 with the option of a further year

Frenkie de Jong is set to extend his stay at Barcelona, with an agreement close to being finalized that will keep him at the club until 2028, with an option for one additional year until 2029, according to El Chiringuito.
Renewal secures key midfielder
The Dutchman, 28, had a deal running until 2026, but Barça wanted to act early to avoid market pressure and ensure stability in midfield. De Jong is considered a crucial piece in Hansi Flick’s project and will continue to earn close to his current salary around €9 million net per season (R$57 million) making him one of the highest-paid players in the squad.
Negotiations with new agent
Talks had been pending due to De Jong’s change of representatives. On Wednesday (20), sporting director Deco met with his new agent at Ciudad Deportiva in a meeting that lasted about an hour and a half. The deal is now at the final stage.
From doubts to commitment
At one point last season, De Jong even considered leaving Camp Nou, frustrated by injuries and limited playing time. However, after regaining full fitness, he became a regular again and shifted his stance toward renewing long-term with the Catalan club.
De Jong’s numbers for Barcelona
In the 2023/24 season, the midfielder played 46 matches, scored two goals and provided two assists. This year, he has already completed the full 90 minutes in Barcelona’s La Liga opener, a 3-0 win over Mallorca.
Arsenal’s past interest
Before agreeing to renew, De Jong was on Arsenal’s radar, but the player’s decision to stay combined with Flick’s insistence now puts an end to speculation about a Premier League move.
With the renewal, Barcelona locks down one of its midfield leaders at a decisive moment of squad rebuilding and financial recovery.
