Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea sell Renato Veiga to Villarreal for €29.5 million

Chelsea have finalized the sale of Portuguese midfielder Renato Veiga to Villarreal for €29.5 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 22-year-old leaves after a disappointing loan at Juventus and no space in Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Renato Veiga leaves after Juventus loan

Veiga, who joined Chelsea as part of the club’s long-term project of investing in young talent, struggled to secure minutes at Stamford Bridge. Last season, he was loaned to Juventus, where he made 15 appearances, recording one assist and no goals.

The lack of impact in Italy sealed his exit, with Villarreal moving quickly to close the deal. The Spanish club agreed to pay €29.5 million (R$188.1 million) for the midfielder.

Chelsea’s new era under Enzo Maresca

While Veiga failed to make his mark, Chelsea are thriving under coach Enzo Maresca. The Blues lifted the UEFA Conference League and also won the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States, beating PSG in the final.

Maresca continues to reshape the squad, prioritizing young players with potential but also moving on those who haven’t fit into his system.

More departures expected at Stamford Bridge

Veiga’s transfer may be just the start. According to reports, Chelsea are also open to selling several big names before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.

Players on the list include:

  • Raheem Sterling
  • Ben Chilwell
  • Christopher Nkunku

Other names such as Carney Chukwuemeka, Nicolas Jackson, Tyrique George, and Axel Disasi are also considered surplus to requirements.

Villarreal gain a promising midfielder

For Villarreal, Veiga arrives as a long-term reinforcement, with the expectation that consistent minutes in La Liga could help him unlock the potential Chelsea initially saw.
