Barcelona not content with just Nico Williams and could take Garnacho from Manchester United

Barcelona’s transfer activity is heating up. While the club edges closer to signing Nico Williams from Athletic Bilbao, new reports suggest the Blaugrana are also monitoring Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho as a second attacking reinforcement.
According to TEAMtalk, Barça’s sporting leadership, under Hansi Flick, is exploring conditions for a move for the 20-year-old Argentine winger, who could leave Old Trafford this summer.
Garnacho on Barça’s Radar as Market Opportunity Emerges
Barcelona view Garnacho as a long-term asset with “enormous upside.” Despite Manchester United’s inconsistency last season, the winger finished strong, contributing:
- 11 goals
- 11 assists
- 58 matches played
Sources in Spain suggest United are open to negotiations, especially if it involves Marc-André ter Stegen, whom the Premier League side sees as a potential addition to improve their goalkeeping options.
Would Garnacho Start at Barcelona?
Even if signed, Garnacho would likely face intense competition for a starting role. Current right-winger Lamine Yamal and Brazilian Raphinha both ended the 2024/25 campaign in excellent form. Additionally, Nico Williams is close to joining the Catalan side and would likely feature on the opposite flank.
That said, Hansi Flick values rotation and squad depth, especially with Champions League football and La Liga title ambitions in focus.
Ter Stegen and Garnacho Swap?
An intriguing subplot to the Garnacho transfer story is Manchester United’s interest in Marc-André ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper is reportedly being considered as a top target to replace Onana or serve as elite depth in United’s goalkeeping department.
The idea of a player-plus-cash deal is not ruled out, as Barcelona could be tempted to offload a high-salary player to manage Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Other Clubs Also Eyeing Garnacho
Barcelona won’t have a free path to Garnacho. Chelsea and Napoli have shown interest in the young winger, although neither club has made a formal offer so far. If Barça are to act, they may need to move quickly before the market heats up further.
Barça’s Summer Transfer Focus
- Nico Williams – Priority signing, in advanced talks
- Alejandro Garnacho – Monitored, potential swap with Ter Stegen
- Zé Lucas (Sporting) – One for the future
- Ter Stegen departure – On Manchester United’s wishlist
