Chelsea to donate part of Club World Cup prize money to the family of the late Diogo and André Jota

Chelsea have announced a touching gesture in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025. According to The Athletic, the London club will donate part of their Club World Cup prize money to the players’ family.
$15 Million Player Bonus Shared with Jota Family
The Blues earned $114.6 million (approx. R$617 million) for winning the Club World Cup in July. Of this, $15 million (approx. R$80.8 million) was allocated as bonuses for the squad. In a unanimous decision during a recent meeting, the players and board agreed to share part of this bonus with the families of the Jota brothers.
Solidarity Beyond the Pitch
The initiative highlights that football’s impact goes beyond trophies and performance. Chelsea’s gesture underscores solidarity, compassion, and unity in the face of tragedy values that resonate deeply in the sporting world.
Liverpool to Continue Paying Jota’s Salary
Liverpool, Diogo Jota’s club at the time of his death, will continue to pay his salary for the two years remaining on his contract. The forward, a key player under manager Arne Slot, earned around £140,000 per week (nearly R$1 million). The decision ensures ongoing support for his widow, Rute Cardoso, and their three children.
Details of the Tragic Accident
Diogo and André Jota were traveling in northern Spain when a tire on Diogo’s car burst on a highway in Sanabria. The vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Both brothers, unable to escape, died at the scene.
