Atlético de Madrid renews interest in signing Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero and prepares new offer for the defender

Atlético de Madrid is preparing a new and aggressive offer to sign Argentine centre-back Cristian “Cuti” Romero, as head coach Diego Simeone intensifies efforts to strengthen the club’s defensive line ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Simeone’s Top Target
Romero, currently at Tottenham Hotspur, is at the top of Simeone’s wish list. According to sources close to the negotiations, Atlético is finalizing a proposal worth €80 million, including €70 million fixed and an additional €10 million in performance-based bonuses.
The offer closely matches Tottenham’s asking price and reflects the Spanish club’s determination to bring in a high-caliber defender despite budgetary constraints.
Personal Connection Could Tip the Deal
Negotiations remain complex due to Tottenham’s resistance to parting with one of their most consistent players. However, Atlético is betting on two key factors: Romero’s personal relationship with Simeone and his interest in playing in La Liga. These elements could prove decisive as talks progress.
Romero has been one of the Premier League’s top-performing defenders since joining Spurs, known for his aggressive tackling, leadership, and aerial presence. The 26-year-old also played a crucial role in Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad in 2022.
Atlético Eyes Funding Through Key Departures
To finance the potential acquisition, Atlético is reportedly counting on outgoing transfers. Conor Gallagher, currently of Chelsea, is being monitored by several Premier League sides, and his sale could generate significant funds.
In addition, Samu Lino’s recent move to Flamengo contributed to the club’s revenue, although further sales will be required to balance the books for a high-value signing like Romero.
Deal Still in Play
Tottenham is holding firm, insisting on a minimum of €80 million, and has so far shown no indication of relaxing its position. Nevertheless, Atlético remains confident that the player’s willingness to move and Simeone’s influence could break the deadlock in the coming days.
