England player Ella Toone reveals she lost her grandmother on the morning of the Women’s Euro final

On the same day the England women’s national team lifted their second UEFA Women’s Euro title, midfielder Ella Toone revealed she played the final under heartbreaking circumstances having lost her grandmother that very morning.

Emotional Strength in a Historic Win

Toone, 24, started the match and played nearly 90 minutes as the Lionesses defeated Spain 1-1 (4-2 on penalties) in a dramatic final rematch of the 2023 FIFA World Cup. England came from behind to equalize in the second half and clinched the title with a composed shootout, where Chloe Kelly scored the decisive penalty.

While millions celebrated across the country, Toone privately mourned. On social media, the Manchester United star wrote:

“Even in the highest moments, life can hit us with the lowest. My grandma Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final.”

Toone added that her grandmother was not only a football fanatic but also one of her earliest supporters, even placing a bet years ago that she would one day play for England.

“I’ll miss you forever, Grandma. But I’ll cherish the memories we created. My football-loving, crazy, and funny grandma we brought it home for you.”

A Pillar of England’s Midfield

Toone’s performance in the final was emblematic of her composure and commitment. She has become a mainstay in Sarina Wiegman’s midfield and is one of the faces of England’s continued dominance in women’s football.

This latest Euro title marks England’s second consecutive championship, following their 2022 win, and comes just one year after their World Cup final loss to Spain in Sydney.

Looking Ahead: Return to Club Duties

Ella Toone is set to return to Manchester United Women later this month. The club will resume competitive action on August 27 with a critical Women’s Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven.

United will then kick off their 2025/26 Women’s Super League (WSL) season against Leicester City on September 7 at 8 a.m. Brasília time (12 p.m. UK).
