Aston Villa push to keep Marco Asensio after impressive loan spell

Aston Villa is working to extend Marco Asensio’s stay at Villa Park following a standout five-month loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Spanish playmaker impressed under Unai Emery, scoring eight goals in 21 matches and emerging as a key creative force in Villa’s midfield. Now, the Premier League club wants to renew his loan or secure a permanent deal before PSG makes a final decision.

PSG Open to Letting Asensio Leave

According to L’Équipe, Asensio is on PSG’s transfer list this summer, alongside names like Randal Kolo Muani. The 28-year-old struggled for minutes under coach Luis Enrique, who does not see him as part of the club’s long-term project.

Despite interest from Benfica, who reportedly submitted an €11 million bid, and Turkish side Fenerbahçe, PSG has yet to respond. The Turkish club later pulled out due to financial constraints.

Villa, however, are confident in their position. The Spanish midfielder’s strong performances particularly in European competition—have convinced Emery and the board that he deserves to stay.

Asensio’s Impact at Villa Park

Asensio joined Aston Villa alongside Marcus Rashford during the January transfer window to help strengthen the club’s Champions League push. While Villa missed out via the Premier League route, they made it to the Champions League quarterfinals, where ironically, they were eliminated by PSG.

During his loan spell, Asensio registered:

  • 8 goals
  • 1 assist
  • 13 appearances
  • 1,119 minutes played

The former Real Madrid star regularly delivered clutch performances, particularly with his late runs into the box and calm finishing—traits that had been underutilized in Paris.

Future Still Uncertain

Before his move to England, Asensio had made just 16 appearances for PSG this season, mostly as a makeshift striker. With limited game time and a role outside of his preferred position, his departure seemed inevitable.

PSG is reportedly open to letting him leave again this summer, though this time they may prefer a permanent transfer. The Ligue 1 champions are believed to value the midfielder at €20 million (around R$127 million), a figure that could be within reach for Villa.

Aston Villa is now in talks to either extend the loan or negotiate a purchase, aiming to block any return to PSG or move elsewhere.
