Arteta defends Gyökeres after Arsenal’s low-key debut against Manchester United

Swedish striker struggled in attack but earned praise for his tactical role
Arsenal opened their Premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United, marking Viktor Gyökeres’ debut in the Gunners’ attack. Despite the Swedish striker’s lackluster display he failed to register a single shot in 60 minutes manager Mikel Arteta downplayed criticism and highlighted his overall contribution.
Arteta Praises Tactical Discipline
Speaking to Fabrizio Romano, Arteta stressed that Gyökeres’ impact went beyond statistics:
“Gyökeres did a lot of very good things, I’m happy,” the manager said.
Arteta also reminded fans that the squad is still finding rhythm at the start of the season:
“You can tell by our high pressing and the pace we demand, there are things we need to work on. Coming to Manchester United and getting a win in your first game is a very good start.”
Gyökeres’ Numbers Tell a Different Story
While Arteta defended his striker, Gyökeres’ performance left much to be desired. The Swede:
- Had just 22 actions with the ball
- Lost possession 11 times
- Won only 2 of 7 duels
- Registered no shots on goal
He finished with the lowest rating on the team (6.0), sparking disapproval from fans on social media.
Patience Urged as Season Begins
Despite the criticism, Arteta emphasized that it is too early to judge. With new signings still adapting and chemistry yet to develop, the manager believes Gyökeres will soon justify his transfer fee.
What’s Next for Arsenal
Arsenal will look to build on their winning start when they face Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 23 (1:30 pm Brasília time). Arteta is expected to refine the team’s attacking patterns and provide Gyökeres with more service in front of goal.
