Sporting Eyes Experienced Midfielder Tiago Silva from Vitória de Guimarães

The 32-year-old captain of Vitória SC could bring leadership, creativity, and Liga Portugal experience to Alvalade

Sporting CP is targeting a new reinforcement for its midfield, and this time, the name on the table is a familiar one in Portuguese football: Tiago Silva. The 32-year-old playmaker has been one of the pillars of Vitória de Guimarães over the past four seasons and is now attracting strong interest from the Lisbon giants.

According to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Sporting has placed Tiago Silva on its shortlist as a possible addition for the 2025/26 season, with a move potentially materializing in the coming weeks.

Tiago Silva’s Numbers Speak for Themselves

Tiago Silva has quietly built a reputation as one of the most consistent midfielders in Liga Portugal. Since joining Vitória SC in 2021, he has made 151 appearances, scored 23 goals, and delivered 19 assists solid numbers for a central midfielder.

Beyond the stats, he’s been a true leader for the Guimarães squad, often wearing the captain’s armband and acting as a reference point for younger players.

Reuniting with Rui Borges?

One key factor in this potential move is Silva’s past relationship with Rui Borges, Sporting’s current head coach. The two worked together at Vitória before Borges moved to Alvalade to replace Rúben Amorim. Their connection could ease the player’s transition and add a trusted veteran to the new Sporting project.

A Journey from Lisbon to Europe and Back

Although born in Lisbon, Tiago Silva has spent most of his professional life far from the capital. He began his youth career at SL Olivais, later moving through Benfica and Belenenses, where he made his Primeira Liga debut in 2012/13.

From there, Silva had stints with Feirense, and abroad with Nottingham Forest (England) and Olympiakos (Greece). In Greece, he won the Super League title under Pedro Martins, alongside a host of Portuguese players including José Sá and Bruma.

Since returning to Portugal, he’s become a symbol of stability and leadership at Vitória SC.

Sporting’s Midfield Plans

Sporting is reportedly restructuring its midfield amid possible changes in the squad. While the Lions have targeted younger names in the market, the addition of an experienced leader like Tiago Silva would provide a balance between youth and experience, especially in high-pressure matches and European competitions.

With a contract valid until June 2026, Vitória SC could demand a transfer fee, but Sporting may see the veteran’s leadership qualities and on-field intelligence as well worth the investment.
