Spain Confirms Favoritism, Beats Switzerland 2-0 to Reach Women’s Euro Semifinals

Goals from Athenea and Claudia Pina seal dominant performance in Basel

Spain advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Women’s Euro Cup after a commanding 2-0 win over hosts Switzerland this Friday (18), confirming their status as one of the tournament favorites. Goals in the second half from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina ensured La Roja’s place among the final four of the competition.

The match, held in Basel, was largely controlled by the Spanish side from the opening whistle, despite a goalless first half.

Spain Controls First Half but Can’t Break Through

Spain began the match aggressively, maintaining high possession and pressing the Swiss defense. Throughout the first half, the visitors created several scoring chances, but Switzerland’s disciplined back line, led by goalkeeper Gaëlle Thalmann, held firm to keep the score level at 0–0.

Despite the territorial dominance, the Spanish lacked clinical finishing in the opening 45 minutes, with most attempts either blocked or off-target.

Goals Reflect Second-Half Supremacy

Spain returned from the break even more assertive. Their pressure finally paid off in the 21st minute, when Aitana Bonmatí intercepted a Swiss clearance and assisted Athenea del Castillo, who slotted a low shot into the corner to open the scoring.

Just five minutes later, Claudia Pina doubled the lead with a spectacular strike from outside the area, leaving no chance for the Swiss goalkeeper.

Spain nearly extended their advantage late in the match when a penalty was awarded after a VAR review. However, Alexia Putellas was denied from the spot by Seraina Friedli, keeping the score at 2–0.

Eyes on the Semifinal

With the win, Spain secured a place in the Women’s Euro Cup semifinals, where they will face the winner of France vs. Germany. The semifinal match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, at 21:00 local time (20:00 CET).

Spain’s victory reinforces their status as a strong title contender, combining technical dominance with depth across the squad.
