Gyökeres Rejects Manchester United to Avoid Reunion with Ruben Amorim

Swedish striker prioritizes Arsenal move amid tense history with former Sporting coach

Viktor Gyökeres has rejected a transfer to Manchester United, citing his unwillingness to reunite with former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, according to Portuguese outlet Record. The 27-year-old Swedish striker has instead made it clear that his preferred destination is Arsenal.

Rift with Amorim Key in United Snub

Despite having had a standout season under Amorim at Sporting, the relationship between the two was reportedly strained behind the scenes. Following Amorim’s departure, Gyökeres flourished even further, gaining more freedom and prominence in the squad.

The potential of being managed again by Amorim, who recently took over at Manchester United, was a decisive factor in Gyökeres’s refusal to join the Premier League giants.

Lindelöf Situation Also Played a Role

Another reason behind Gyökeres’s stance was his discontent with Manchester United’s treatment of fellow Swede Victor Lindelöf. The defender’s contract renewal has reportedly not even been discussed, which Gyökeres and his camp saw as a sign of disrespect.

These factors have solidified his focus on a move to Arsenal, where he is eager to play under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal Remain in Talks with Sporting

Gyökeres remains a priority signing for Arsenal, though a final agreement with Sporting CP has yet to be reached. The Portuguese side is demanding a transfer fee of around €90 million, a figure they are standing firm on, given the striker’s contract runs until 2028.

Sporting feels confident in negotiations due to the player’s long-term deal and rising market value.

Arteta Dodges Transfer Question

Asked about Gyökeres during a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s friendly with Milan, Mikel Arteta declined to confirm any details:

“I can’t comment on any player who isn’t part of our squad,” said the Arsenal boss, though his tone suggested ongoing discussions behind the scenes.

Arsenal vs Milan – Friendly Clash Ahead

Arsenal will take on AC Milan this Wednesday (23) at 8:30 a.m. (Brasília time) as part of their 2025/26 preseason. Gyökeres could be the final piece of Arteta’s puzzle as the Gunners aim for silverware in the upcoming campaign.
