Germany Stun France in Penalty Shootout to Reach Euro 2025 Semifinals

Ten-player Germany advanced to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semifinals after a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout win over France, becoming the first team in tournament history to overturn a deficit with a player sent off.

Geyoro Scores Early, But Germany Fights Back

France took the lead in the 15th minute after Grace Geyoro converted a penalty. The spot kick was awarded following a VAR check that saw Kathrin Hendrich sent off for pulling Griedge Mbock Bathy’s hair inside the box.

Despite going down to 10 players, Germany responded swiftly. Sjoeke Nüsken equalised in the 25th minute with a powerful header from a corner, leveling the match at 1-1.

Drama Until the Final Whistle

Both sides created chances in a tense second half. France had two goals ruled out for offside, while Pauline Peyraud-Magnin denied Nüsken a second goal by saving a penalty.

The score remained 1-1 through regular time and extra time, leading to penalties.

Ann-Katrin Berger the Hero

German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger delivered a stunning performance, making nine saves during the match and two more in the shootout. Her decisive stop on Alice Sombath’s attempt clinched Germany’s improbable victory.

Next Up: Spain

Germany now advances to the semifinals, where they will meet tournament favourites Spain on Wednesday, July 23, at 4 p.m. Brasília time, in what promises to be a clash of European giants.
